GETTING STARTED WITH RESEARCH
If you don't know how to start with your research project (assignment, poster, etc.) visit this specially prepared website: Getting Started with your Research.
ENGAGED IN RESEARCH: THE RESEARCH PROCESS
Research is an investigation or enquiry into a topic, with the aim to discover, revise or interpret facts. The end result of your research should enhance existing knowledge of your chosen subject area and often provides more questions for you or other researchers to investigate further. The foundation of all research, regardless of discipline and activity, is the Scientific Method and following it is often a matter of common sense.
The information will be of interest to all Masters and Doctoral students and any new scientist who is just starting with its own research.
Go to Engaged in Research: The Research process for step by step detailed guide. Find also selected books from the UJ Auckland Park Library, which can help you learn more about the research process and how to writing scientifically. Statistical softwares and tools are also given.
I have followed the structure of the freely available guidelines from Engaged in Research website (UK)

MANAGE YOUR REFERENCES
REFWORKS & REFSHARE
RefWorks is web-based bibliographic software package that enables you to:
- Organize your research
- Include citations while you write your paper
- Build a bibliography in a variety of formats (e.g. Harvard, APA etc. RefWorks has an extensive format collection from different journals)
- Import references from many data sources (online databases, web pages, text files, other bibliographical managers, manually, RSS feeds)
- •Create bibliographies in different document formats (Word, RTF, HTML, etc.)
Access directly RefWorks. RefWorks is accessible anywhere, any time, regardless of your location. Just create an account.

CITING & REFERENCING
By Citing and Referencing we are acknowledging the works of the authors, which works we consulted or directly quoted in our research papers, theses or dissertations, or articles for publication.
Every Faculty of Science Department uses it's own method (usually Harvard method) of referencing. Students and Researchers are given specific guidelines by the Departments, which they need to follow to complete a literature review or a research paper.
When you are busy preparing article for publication, you should find what are the citing and referencing requirements for that specific journal (publisher).
In the Library we have available Reference Techniques document (PDF) for both Harvard & APA methods.
Additional citing and reference tool is RefWorks. If you have used RefWorks to import and manage your references, you can directly "write-and-cite" into your research paper and export your reference list, according to the required reference method needs. Learn more by visiting RefWorks support website or contact your subject librarian for training and assistance.

COPYRIGHT
Why the concern about copyright ?
It is the University’s policy to comply with the Copyright Act and Regulations and in so doing to respect the rights of the authors and publishers and to pay reasonable license fees where required by law.
Infringement of copyright by the Universities, Heads of Departments or lecturers and students could result in legal action and possible awards of damages. Read the Copyright website for more information.
Access directly the Dalro Blanket License form, which needs to be used for all copyright permission requests.
Contact the UJ Copyright officer Thapelo Mashishi on: thapelom@uj.ac.za or Tel: 011 559 2182 & Fax: 011 726 7723.

PLAGIARISM
Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work, or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense:
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:
- to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
- to use (another's production) without crediting the source
- to commit literary theft
- to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.
For more resources (books, tutorials, useful links) on Plagiarism, go to the Sciences Librarian Plagiarism Portal.
Make use of Turnitin @ UJ: A tool for online plagiarism prevention that is integrated with Edulink. Lecturers may choose to have learners submit their assignments, thesis, etc. electronically via turnitin for plagiarism detection (to prevent learners from submitting copies of other learners' assignments or copying and pasting from the Internet and/or journals, etc.)
