Library Instructions to First Year Students: Sciences, APK
LIBRARY HELP & INFO SKILLING: FIRST YEAR STUDENTSThe opening of the academic year in January is marked by an intense period of library instructions and information literacy trainings. The purpose is to equip learners with information literacy skills to find information as needed and analyse it critically. Individuals, who are information literate will be able to assume greater control over their learning and decision making in every stage of life.
2010 Sciences training schedules at APK! The following information literacy trainings are provided in the APK Library:
Library Orientation: Library Tour (APK)
UJ Sciences students have a organised tour in the Library, during January orientation.
The Sciences Subject Librarian, Pavlinka Kovatcheva (pkovatcheva@uj.ac.za, tel: 011 559-2621) presents an overview of the library by taking the learners on a TOUR of the Library (13 January 2010, from 11:30 - 13:00h).

General Library orientation (APK)During the University orientation, a time is allocated for Library instruction. First year students are shown a CD about the library on APK Campus. Students will learn about the library facilities, services, products and support.
Additional information about the Library will be provided. Library Training: Sigh-up Sessions (APK)Don't know how to find books & journals in the library catalog? Repeatedly losing points on assignments, because you don't know how to retrieve academic information? Don't know how to reference your citations? To help you do your best, the library offers FREE trainings.
Sign-up sessions involve learners registering to take classes on how to use the library and its resources. The sessions include training on:
Once you get started with your studies in February, come and attend one or more training sessions in the library. The sign-up sessions booking lists are displayed in the Library foyer.
P.S.: Ensure that the training class will not clash with your course classes. Keep your appointments!

Ask either the Security or the Library staff for assistance. The Info skilling Librarian usually wait for the booked students in the Library Foyer.

Group Training SessionsUsually the subject librarian and the lecturers, arrange time slots for students during their practicals to have library group training sessions.
The trainings are adapted to the need of the students. Have a look at the current trainings offered at APK, by the Sciences Librarian.
Virtual Learning Environment (EduLink through Student Portal)The subject librarian with the collaboration of the lecturers can arrange subject specific support to you: Either through EduLink or specifically prepared websites.
